Are local heating oil dealers cheaper than national companies?

There is no public dataset that answers this, because no survey collects dealer level prices by ownership type. Anyone who gives you a percentage has taken it from a company or invented it. Get two quotes in the same week and compare those.

Where does a national chain genuinely win?

Fleet depth in a widespread outage, formal credit and budget arrangements, service technician availability across a wide area, and back office consistency when something goes wrong on an account.

Where does an independent genuinely win?

Local route density in its own towns, flexibility on delivery timing and on minimums, and a person who knows your address. In a rural corner of a state it may also be the only company that will come at all.

How do I check either one?

Use the state register where one exists, ask both for a per gallon rate at your volume in the same call, and ask each the same five plan questions. That comparison is worth more than any national generalization.

Everybody has a view on this and almost nobody has evidence, so start with what is actually knowable. No public survey collects heating oil prices by dealer, let alone by ownership type. The federal series collects a state average across all dealers. That is the ceiling on what can honestly be said about price.

The evidence base, stated

We checked eleven companies on 10 September 2026, eight American and three British, across every size from a two county independent to a New York Stock Exchange listed partnership. None of them publishes a heating oil rate card. That is a uniform finding across the whole size range, and it is the most useful thing in this section.

The federal state print is the only benchmark a household has. At $5.54 nationally and a spread from $3.97 to $5.91 across states, the differences between states are larger than any plausible difference between a chain and an independent in the same town.

The one question that settles it locally

Ring both and ask for the per gallon rate at your actual volume, today, with any delivery fee stated separately. Then ask what that rate would be at half the volume. Two calls, four numbers, and you have a better answer for your address than any national article can give you.
